Phenyl HPLC Columns
USHD Phenyl HPLC Columns
USHD Phenyl is a reversed-phase phenylpropyl column, USP L11. Retention is hydrophobic, and the phenyl ring adds π-π interaction, so aromatic selectivity differs from C18.
The published specification is 5 μm, 3 μm, and 1.8 μm, 120 Å, 320 m²/g, 12% carbon, pH 2–8. Diameters on the selection sheet are 2.1 mm, 3.0 mm, and 4.6 mm.
USHD Phenyl HPLC column
Features
A phenylpropyl reversed-phase column for aromatic compounds that a C18 phase does not separate.
- Phenylpropyl phase — Ultra-pure silica bonded with a phenylpropyl stationary phase. USP L11. The published carbon load is 12%, surface area 320 m²/g, pore size 120 Å, pH 2–8.
- Hydrophobic plus π-π — The phase keeps reversed-phase retention and adds π-π interaction between the phenyl ring and aromatic analytes. That is the selectivity difference versus a linear alkane phase such as C18.
- Endcapping — The specification notes a double endcapping process for better peak symmetry.
- 100% aqueous mobile phase — The current page says the phase can run in 100% water, for water-soluble compounds as well as conventional reversed-phase solvents.
- Three particle sizes — 5 μm, 3 μm, and 1.8 μm, all listed at 120 Å on the published specification table. Smaller particles raise resolution and backpressure.

FAQ
Answers from the current phenyl page and the 120 Å selection list.
01 What is a phenyl HPLC column?
USHD Phenyl is a reversed-phase column with a phenylpropyl stationary phase bonded to ultra-pure silica. The published USP listing is L11. Retention is hydrophobic, like C18, and the phenyl ring also gives π-π interaction with aromatic analytes.
02 How does USHD Phenyl compare with C18?
A linear C18 chain separates mainly by hydrophobicity. USHD Phenyl keeps that retention and adds π-π interaction, so aromatic compounds and some isomers that co-elute on C18 can separate. Use phenyl when a C18 method is not giving the selectivity you need.
03 What are the published specifications?
USP L11. Particle size 5 μm, 3 μm, or 1.8 μm. The specification table lists pore size 120 Å, surface area 320 m²/g, carbon load 12%, and pH 2–8. The selection sheet also has a 300 Å section at the same analytical diameters. Those 300 Å catalog numbers are confirmed on request.
04 Which catalog number is the 4.6×250 mm column?
USHD Phenyl, 5 μm, 120 Å, 4.6×250 mm is P1F0B-00316. The 5 μm, 4.6×150 mm column is P1F0B-00317. The 3 μm and 1.8 μm lists do not include 4.6×250 mm. The longest 3 μm column on the sheet is 4.6×150 mm, P1F0B-00318. The longest 1.8 μm column is 4.6×100 mm, P1F0B-00535.
05 Are these preparative columns?
No. Every diameter on this selection sheet is 2.1 mm, 3.0 mm, or 4.6 mm. Those are analytical HPLC columns. Preparative and semi-preparative columns start at 10 mm ID and are listed on the prep HPLC columns page.
06 What compounds is USHD Phenyl used for?
The current page names aromatic compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pharmaceuticals with aromatic rings, and natural products such as flavonoids and alkaloids. It also names isomer separations, and water-soluble aromatics such as nucleobases, nucleosides, and the aromatic amino acids phenylalanine, tryptophan, and tyrosine.
07 Can it run in 100% water?
The current page says phenyl columns can be used with a mobile phase that is entirely water, which is one reason they are used for water-soluble compounds that do not dissolve in the organic solvents typical of a C18 method.
08 When is PFP or C18 the better choice?
Stay on C18 when hydrophobic retention already meets the method. Move to USHD Phenyl for aromatic selectivity and π-π interaction. USHD PFP is a different phase, USP L43, and is the alternative when halogenated compounds or the extra dipole character of pentafluorophenyl is what the separation needs.
