What Is an HPLC Inlet Filter?

An HPLC inlet filter is a porous filter installed at the end of the solvent suction tubing inside the mobile phase reservoir. It removes particles before the solvent enters the HPLC pump and flow path.

HPLC inlet filters are also commonly called solvent inlet filters, HPLC suction filters, solvent suction filters and mobile phase inlet filters. HIPSOUL parts on this page are 316L sintered stainless steel for OD tubing, ID tubing and flat-plate reservoir layouts. They are not HPLC inline filters and not guard columns.

Why Use a Solvent Inlet Filter in HPLC?

Particle contamination

Captures particles from mobile phase reservoirs before they reach the pump.

Pump protection

Helps reduce contamination of pump components and check valves.

Flow stability

Reduces the risk of particles entering downstream fluid paths.

Maintenance control

Provides a simple upstream filtration point that can be inspected, cleaned or replaced.

HPLC Suction Filter Types

HPLC Inlet Filter Cleaning & Replacement

Inspect a solvent inlet filter when pump suction drops, bubbles increase, or particles are visible on the sintered body. Those signs can indicate blockage, incomplete immersion or damage. They do not by themselves diagnose pump failure.

Some 316L sintered inlet filters can be cleaned. Cleaning compatibility depends on the filter material, the mobile phase and the contamination type. Follow the HPLC manufacturer instructions and any filter-specific guidance before rinsing, ultrasonic treatment or reinstallation. Do not use a cleaning solvent that attacks the sinter, the stem polymer or the existing HPLC flow path.

Replace the filter when the porous body is cracked, crushed, irreversibly blocked, or when compatible cleaning does not restore suction. Keep the replacement fully immersed in the reservoir.

HPLC Inlet Filter FAQ

What is an HPLC inlet filter?

An HPLC inlet filter is a porous filter installed at the end of the solvent suction tubing inside the mobile phase reservoir. It removes particles before the solvent enters the HPLC pump and flow path. HIPSOUL models on this page are 316L sintered stainless steel in OD, ID and flat-plate geometries.

Is an HPLC suction filter the same as a solvent inlet filter?

In many HPLC applications, the terms refer to the porous filter installed at the solvent suction line inside the mobile phase reservoir. Naming varies between manufacturers and laboratories. HPLC inlet filter, solvent inlet filter, HPLC suction filter and mobile phase inlet filter are used here for the same reservoir hardware, not for a high-pressure inline filter.

Where is an HPLC inlet filter installed?

It sits in the solvent or mobile phase bottle, fully immersed, on the low-pressure suction line that feeds the pump. Do not install a reservoir inlet filter in the high-pressure path after the pump, and do not use it as a substitute for an HPLC inline filter or a guard column.

What pore size should I choose for an HPLC inlet filter?

Match the original system specification and the cleanliness of the mobile phase. Listed HIPSOUL 316L models are offered in 2 μm, 5 μm, 10 μm and 20 μm. If the existing part number or drawing specifies a pore, send that value with the RFQ rather than guessing a finer rating.

What is the difference between an HPLC inlet filter and an inline filter?

An HPLC inlet filter is a low-pressure suction filter in the reservoir, before the pump. An HPLC inline filter is a particle trap in the pressurized flow path and is typically used to protect downstream components or the column. The two positions are complementary, not interchangeable.

Can stainless steel HPLC inlet filters be cleaned?

Some 316L sintered inlet filters can be inspected, rinsed with a compatible solvent and returned to service when the sinter is intact. Cleaning depends on filter material, mobile phase and contamination type, and should follow the instrument and filter instructions. Replace the filter if flow cannot be restored or the porous body is damaged.

How often should an HPLC solvent inlet filter be replaced?

Replace it when suction is restricted, the porous body is damaged, or mobile-phase cleanliness can no longer be maintained by inspection and compatible cleaning. Interval depends on solvent quality, dust load and how fully the filter stays immersed. There is no single calendar interval published for every HPLC method on this page.

Can you provide compatible filters for Agilent, Shimadzu or Waters systems?

The catalog lists reference part numbers for compatibility evaluation: Agilent 01018-60025 / AG01018-60025, Shimadzu 228-45707-91, Shimadzu 370-02010-01 and Waters 700003616. These are identification references, not claims of identical branded spare parts. Send the instrument model, original number, dimensions or a photo for a HIPSOUL option review.

Can HPLC suction filters be customized?

Yes. Custom body diameter and length, pore size within the listed 2-20 μm range, OD or ID stem geometry, and flat-head layouts can be evaluated from a drawing, sample or existing part number. See OEM and custom capabilities or send the requirement on the quote form.
