Ghost Buster Column for HPLC & UHPLC
Reduce mobile-phase-related ghost peaks in gradient HPLC and UHPLC analysis with HIPSOUL Ghost Buster Columns. Designed to trap impurities from solvents, tubing and gradient mixing systems before they reach the injector and analytical column.
A Ghost Buster Column is a ghost peak trap column, not a substitute for an HPLC guard column. It targets contaminants that enter the system with the mobile phase. Send a part number, column size or chromatogram if you need a replacement or OEM match.

What Is a Ghost Buster Column?
A Ghost Buster Column is an impurity trapping column installed in the HPLC or UHPLC flow path to capture contaminants that originate in the mobile phase, solvent lines, pump or gradient mixer. In gradient elution, weakly retained impurities can accumulate under low organic conditions and later elute as delayed ghost peaks when the organic fraction increases. A ghost peak removal column is intended to intercept those impurities before they reach the injector.
It does not replace the analytical column, and it is not a conventional guard column. Guard columns are placed after the injector to protect the analytical column from sample particles and strongly retained sample components. A Ghost Buster Column, also described as a ghost peak trap column or mobile phase impurity trap, addresses a different contamination source: the solvent delivery path upstream of injection.
Key functions
- Trap mobile-phase impurities
- Reduce gradient-related ghost peaks
- Improve baseline cleanliness
- Support trace-level analysis
How a Ghost Buster Column Works
Installing the Ghost Buster Column before the injector allows it to capture impurities originating from the mobile phase and upstream flow path without trapping sample components introduced through the injector.
- Mobile Phase
- Pump
- Gradient Mixer
- Ghost Buster Column
- Injector
- Analytical Column
- Detector
Recommended installation point: between the gradient mixer and the injector.

Always follow the installation instructions for the specific Ghost Buster Column configuration. Cartridge-type and column-type hardware use the same upstream placement, but fittings and holders can differ.
Ghost Buster Column Options
HIPSOUL Ghost Buster Columns are available as replaceable cartridges and as column-type hardware. Cartridge details are also listed on the Ghost Buster Column cartridge page; holders are listed separately under Ghost Buster Column holders.

Pressure ratings apply to the listed configuration, not to every Ghost Buster Column. Confirm connection hardware, holder type and operating pressure against your HPLC or UHPLC system before installation.
Where Should a Ghost Buster Column Be Installed?
A Ghost Buster Column is typically installed between the gradient mixer and the injector so that impurities from the mobile phase and upstream HPLC flow path can be trapped before sample injection.
Correct installation: Gradient Mixer → Ghost Buster Column → Injector
If the trap is placed after the injector, it can contact injected sample and no longer perform its intended mobile-phase purification role. That placement is closer to a guard-column function and is not how these Ghost Buster Column configurations are specified.
Always follow the installation instructions for the specific Ghost Buster Column configuration, including cartridge holders and high-pressure 2.1 mm column-type hardware.
What Causes Ghost Peaks in HPLC?
Ghost peaks are chromatographic signals that do not belong to the injected sample. In gradient HPLC they often appear as delayed peaks because impurities collect during equilibration and are released when solvent strength increases. A Ghost Buster Column can help when the source is the mobile phase or the solvent delivery path. It will not correct every ghost peak.
Potentially addressed by a Ghost Buster Column
- Mobile phase impurities
- Solvent contamination
- Tubing contamination
- Gradient mixer contamination
- Impurities accumulating during gradient equilibration
Usually requiring other troubleshooting
- Autosampler carryover
- Injection contamination
- Sample contamination
- Column contamination
- Detector cell contamination
- Memory effects

Ghost Buster Column vs Guard Column
| Feature | Ghost Buster Column | Guard Column |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Trap mobile-phase / system impurities | Protect the analytical column from sample-related contamination |
| Typical location | Before injector | After injector, before analytical column |
| Main contaminant source | Mobile phase / pump / tubing / mixer | Injected sample |
| Primary problem | Ghost peaks / baseline contamination | Column fouling, particles, strongly retained sample components |
| Protects analytical column | Indirectly | Directly |
| Used in gradient HPLC | Especially useful | Common, but a different purpose |
A Ghost Buster Column and a guard column can be used in the same HPLC system because they perform different functions. Do not treat a Ghost Buster Column as an ordinary guard column.

Ghost Buster Column FAQ
What is a Ghost Buster Column?
A Ghost Buster Column is a ghost peak trap column installed upstream of the injector in an HPLC or UHPLC system. It is intended to trap impurities from the mobile phase, tubing, mixer or solvent delivery path before they reach the injector and analytical column. It is not an analytical column and it is not a conventional guard column.
What causes ghost peaks in HPLC?
Ghost peaks are signals that do not belong to the injected analyte. Common sources include mobile-phase impurities, solvent or tubing contamination, gradient mixer contamination, autosampler carryover, sample contamination, column contamination and detector issues. See 3 reasons for ghost peaks and solutions for a longer troubleshooting discussion.
Where should a Ghost Buster Column be installed?
Install it between the gradient mixer and the injector so mobile-phase and upstream flow-path impurities are trapped before sample injection. Follow the instructions for the specific cartridge or column-type configuration.
What is the difference between a Ghost Buster Column and a guard column?
A Ghost Buster Column targets mobile-phase and system impurities before the injector. A guard column sits after the injector to protect the analytical column from sample-related contamination. They can be used together. See the HPLC guard columns page for sample-side protection.
Can a Ghost Buster Column remove all ghost peaks?
No. It primarily targets ghost peaks related to mobile-phase and upstream flow-path contamination. Ghost peaks caused by autosampler carryover, sample contamination, analytical-column contamination or detector issues require separate troubleshooting.
How do I choose the correct Ghost Buster Column size?
Match system pressure first, then ID, length and listed internal volume. 2.1 mm column-type parts are listed at ≤ 100 MPa; 3.0 mm at ≤ 65 MPa; 4.6 mm and 7.6 mm configurations at ≤ 35 MPa. Larger listed volume may increase trapping capacity but can add system volume.
Can I use a Ghost Buster Column for UHPLC?
Use a configuration whose listed pressure rating covers the UHPLC method. On this page, the 2.1 × 30 mm and 2.1 × 50 mm column-type options (HPGPC-021030 and HPGPC-021050) are the listed ≤ 100 MPa configurations. Do not use a ≤ 35 MPa cartridge on a UHPLC pressure method unless the system pressure stays within that rating.
Can uHPLCs manufacture custom Ghost Buster Columns?
Yes. Custom ID, length, housing, cartridge layout, internal volume, pressure-rated hardware, private label and drawing-based production can be evaluated. Send the target system, dimensions, pressure, application and existing specifications via the contact form.
